Diamond Boats

The photo was taken at Lambert's Bay, West Coast, Western Cape Province in South Africa. These are in-shore boats, the smaller cousins of off-shore boats. (wow!)The large diameter hoses (on the jetty and trailing behind the boats on the sea surface) are simply large vacuum hoses that suck gravel off the seabed and onto the boats where the gravel is sorted. The hoses are operated by divers; hard, cold and exhausting work, so much so that the divers can work a mere 6 days a month.

5 Years Hence

It was about 5 in the afternoon, as I remember and people were going home for the day. It got progressively quieter as people turned off their airconditioners. I was working at Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, way out in the Kalahari desert. My phone rang and it was my daughter, calling from Johannesburg. 'Dad.' she said, 'You'd better go home and turn on the TV, there's been some attack in New York.' I called our General manager, Steve Gould and told him to go and turn on CNN. I didn't have a TV at the time, so I went home and waited for VOA to come on as the sun went down. I must have sat listening to the car radio for three or four hours.
Horrified.
